Council looks for green alternatives

Talks are being held between the Vale Commons Council and the Golf Course Management company to see how the island's largest area of publicly-accessible land can be managed more sustainably

This follows the Royal Guernsey Golf Club commissioning a detailed environmental and ecological report examining how the course can be managed in a "greener" fashion.

The VCC has discussed the report with GMC to see whether any elements of the report can be extended to areas of the Common under the council's control.

"This is very much a work in progress," said VCC president Rosemary Henry, "and we're grateful to the clubs for sharing elements of the important study with us."

The council is also looking to increase the use made of the Guernsey Conservation Herd next year as part of its "munch not mow" approach to maintaining the turf.

The use of cattle to control vegetation and encourage the growth of grass significantly increases biodiversity.
